Watch the videos above. The first is informational about the Arms Race - the details of which were top secret - most Americans having no idea the destructive power the U.S. and the Soviet Union were mastering / or experimenting with... The second video was used as an educational program required in public schools - comparable to our ALICE drillls. Imagine being the students in the classrooms being introduced to the new real threat of a nuclear attack in this way. In a comment to this post, share your reaction. You can also consider ideas like how this is similar, how different from our current Corona virus pandemic. What do you think the real purpose of this government required educational program was? You are also encouraged to reply RESPECTFULLY to eachothers' comments.
I do not see too much of a connection between the nuclear threat and the corona virus, because the virus was unintentional and it is not a weapon. People can prevent getting sick better than getting bombed by social distancing. The average American citizen had no control over the bomb. In both cases however, when you walk around outside the safety of your home you don't feel as secure.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophia! Nice job being the first student to post! I agree with the distinctions you drew.
DeleteIf i were a student reacting to a new threat of a bomb, my reaction would probably be to find spots along my route, equally distanced, that could be used for safety, like a spot in each of my classes, maybe two or three places in my house and a couple outside of the school in the stadium where my sports happen. Most likely, for example, some spots for each class would be under a desk and maybe in a basement in my house. A similarity between the potential bombings and the corona pandemic, would be that many people would be constantly scared and paranoid that they could get hurt any second. There are many differences between the two, such as, the pandemic is world wide, the pandemic can only be harmful if in contact with others who have the virus, and, as Sophia Basco said, people have no control over bombings but we do have some control over the virus with social distancing.

Logical actions - Also, I see that when you signed in to the blog you did not designate a screen name. That's okay - you did exactly what I will ask you and anyone else who ends up doing this - if you name doesn't show once you post, edit it to add your name on the bottom or top as Ryan did here.
DeleteI find their drill very interesting. While they promote the duck and cover for safety from a bomb, I think that this will not do much. I think this because if there was an explosion hiding under a desk may be better than nothing, but it will not do much in the situation. Also scientist knew what would happen if one of these bombs went off so they must've known that a simple duck and cover could not be that helpful especially if you were outside in the open against a wall. For the connection with the bombs and corona pandemic, it is creating a fear in almost everyone. Also corona has almost or has shut down every country where there is a lot of people with it. While with the videos of the bombs it made it seem they were able to continue their lives like they normally would.
ReplyDeleteINteresting point, that the scientists knew the duck and cover was probably pointless.... so why spend so much energy / money / etc. running school children through pointless drills?
ReplyDeleteThe duck and cover drill was very useless, but gave people a sense of safety. If a nuclear bomb was detonated in the Arsenal, many miles in radius would be vaporized. However, the government's responsibility was to give the public a method in which to feel safe. Duck and cover was a simple and effective instruction, and this gave people a sense of safety. The government also promoted emergency bunkers in case nuclear war was to break out. The only way I can see this situation comparable to the Corona virus outbreak is the method of isolation, or hiding from the bomb, which was highly encouraged by the government in both cases. If I were a student, I would follow the teachers direction, to remain safe. The Duck and Cover video was first introduced to me in fifth grade, and our teacher explained hiding under a desk would prevent debris from falling on top of our heads.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they were trying to give people a false sense of security. They had to prevent mass hysteria and this was the way to do it. If people thought there was a working plan, they would feel safe.
